The Formula: Quantity × (Length × Curb Depth × Curb Height + Length × Flag Thickness × (Gutter Width + Curb Depth)

How to Measure a Curb and Gutter

Measuring a concrete curb and gutter involves determining a number of different dimensions, including its length, curb depth, curb height, flag thickness and gutter width. That's a lot — but no worries, we've got you covered. As you've likely already seen, you can use our handy calculator above. If you still want to do it by hand, you can use the steps below. Let's begin!

1. Length: Measure the length of the curb and gutter using a measuring tape. Start from one end and extend it to the other end in a straight line.
2. Curb Depth: Determine and measure how much depth you want your curb to have. For reference, this is the thickness of the backmost portion of curb.
3. Curb Height: Determine and measure the height of the curb itself. This is the total height of the curb minus the flag thickness at the bottom, which we will cover in the next step.
4. Flag Thickness: Determine and measure how much flag thickness you'll need. This is the total height of the curb minus the curb height calculated in the previous step.
5. Gutter Width: Measure the gutter width of your curb. This is essentially the width of the portion of the curb that butts up against the curb in the back.

That's it! Now, you can take those measurements and plug them into the formula above and you'll have your estimations.
